2021 Gravel Road Pinot Noir

“Named for the ubiquitous gravel roads along the Willamette Valley hillsides, this 18-month French oak-aged Pinot Noir is brimming with spice, both on the nose and palate. Mulberry, pomegranate, and wild strawberry align with mocha coffee, satisfying and poignant for such a youthful red. Dried roses, tilled soil, leather, and liqueur-enhanced cherries find a mid-point upswing that develops further for a textured depth on the finish.”

2021 Gravel Road Pinot Chardonnay

“This 100% Dijon Clone Chardonnay perfumes the glass with lemon verbena. Notes of crushed stone send a shock wave of acidity, with alternating currents of sweet basil-kissed pears, persimmon, and a mid-palate creamy tapioca. Modern and linear, with an exacting focus.”

2021 The Stalker Pinot Noir

“Winemaker Rollin Soles hails from Australia where grape stems are referred to as “stalks.” You can see him pursued, or stalked, by the Thunderbird logo that represents the winery. Soles de-stems whole berries into small fermenters for a 10-day soak while the removed stems are aged separately for seven days under inert gas. Then, these stems (stalks) are hand-punched into the fermenters and punched down twice a day. The gently pressed juice is transferred to French oak and matured for nine months. The resulting wine speaks to an intensely bright, floral beauty. Cherry bark, dried roses, violets, and a zing of pink peppercorns flourishes on the nose and palate. Wild strawberry, cinnamon, and a tilled soil component are enveloped in a distinct, stemmy mouthfeel.”

2021 Marsh Estate Pinot Noir

Marine sandstone and abundant sunshine flood this site on the low elevation estate in the Dundee Hills. Aromas of black cherry, mulberry jam, and woodsy spices lead to a rich, juiciness on the palate. Earth, sage, cinnamon, and black peppered plum take turns enveloping mocha and brown-sugared dried fruits. Notes of sea fossil on mid-palate add a savory soy sauce/umami effect.

2019 The Stalker Pinot Noir

This is fermented with de-stemmed stalks—not whole clusters—to add what winemaker Rollin Soles calls “stalk-derived spice and body.” In past vintages the result could be excessively stemmy, but Soles has refined the process and the result is a smooth and fruity wine with hints of dill and pepper. The barrel aging (all neutral) nonetheless has left a seam of caramel across the palate, with pomegranate and cherry fruit in the background.

“This wine from an exceptional site displays lush flavors across the back fruit spectrum. The tannins have a lightly grainy texture, with aging in 10% new French oak lending a wash of toast and coffee grounds. This muscular wine has the stuffing to age and the power to stand up to heavier stews and meaty entréed.”

Decanter

2019 The Stalker Pinot Noir

The Stalker is produced from fruit from the Wit’s End vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains. The fruit is destemmed, but the berries are kept whole, and the stems are preserved under inert gas while the fruit does an extended cold soak are added back to the grapes before fermentation. The result has aromas of mulberry and bramble with floral and savoury accents. The structure is firmly tannic but not austere, and the rich fruit balances the tannic grip for a marvelously balanced finish.”

“A wonderful blend of 70% Pinot and 30% Chardonnay that is truly classic from Roco’s Rollin Soles, who pioneered Willamette Valley sparkling wine in his early years at Argyle. Rich aromas of freshly baked bread, spiced pear and nutmeg. The palate reflects ripe peach and pear flavours, wet stone and hints of candied ginger. An Oregon sparkling wine that nails freshness and depth.”

Black raspberry, dark chocolate, a touch of char and robust black cherry fruit are the core flavors here. This is a solid, almost muscular wine, with balancing acidity and ripe tannins. There’s a hint of black pepper, and the overall complexity seems sure to increase with further bottle age. All in all, this is a complex, sophisticated, detailed and long-flavored wine that should provide pleasure through the rest of the decade.
